Dedicated IP Address

A dedicated IP address is a unique IP address associated with your domain name (for example, Google’s unique IP address is 66.249.89.104.  If you type that into your web browser, you will always end up at google.com).  It is not used by any other domains, as is the case with shared IP addresses.  As you might expect, it costs extra to obtain the use of a dedicated IP address.

Large sites, and business/e-commerce sites will typically have a dedicated IP address.  You need a dedicated IP if you want to install an SSL certificate on your site.  Having a dedicated IP means your site won’t be affected by the actions of other users who would otherwise be sharing the same IP.  Another bonus is that sites with dedicated IP addresses tend to get higher rankings in search engines.
