Domain Names

Top Level Domain names (TLDs) that you can use for your website, fall into two basic categories:

TLDs that may be registered by anyone
.COM
.ORG.NET.BIZ - .INFO.CC.TV.WS.NU.BZ

These TLDs are by far the easiest to register — if the name is available, you can register it there and then (the only exception is with .biz names, which may only be registered by those who intend on using it for business or commercial purposes). Once registered, it can be used immediately. When you own one of these domain names, you can on-sell it later if you wish, sometimes for a reasonable profit.

If you are purchasing a website design package from us, that includes free hosting and a free domain name, we will register a TLD on your behalf (.com, .net, .org, .info or .biz only). Or, if you want to register your own domain now, simply click here.

(N.B.: To retain ownership of a domain name, you must pay an ongoing annual fee.  Failure to pay this fee will result in you relinquishing the domain.)

Australian issued TLDs
.COM.AU.ORG.AU
.NET.AU.ASN.AU.ID.AU

These ones are not so straight forward to register.  To register a .com.au or .net.au, you need to have an ABN (Australian Business Number), and the domain must pass an approval process to ensure it is in line with your business name, the product or service you trade in, or the profession in which you practice.

.org.au domains are available only to registered non-profit organizations and charities.  Once again, the domain name needs to pass an approval process, and it must be in line with the name of the organization or the services the organization provides.

.asn.au is only available to registered Australian associations, clubs, sporting groups, political parties and close equivalents.  You must have an ABN, or registration or incorporation number.

.id.au domain names are for Australian citizens and residents.  The domain you choose can be based on any name by which you are known.

All .au domains must be registered/renewed for a minimum of 2 years at a time.  Once again, you are required to pay an ongoing fee every 2 years to maintain use of the domain.  It is possible to sell a .au domain name, however there are conditions that need to be met.

If you are purchasing a website design package from us, please note that .au domains are not included in the free domain offer.  We are happy to help you register a .au address if that is your preference, however this will be at additional cost to you (approximately $25 for 2 years).
