An SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate is a digital certificate which is installed on your web server.  It authenticates the identity of your site, and encrypts information being sent between your visitor’s computer and your site.

Any site that has reason to request their visitor’s personal information should have an SSL certificate installed.  SSL certificates create a sense of security, as the visitor knows that any information they send to your website will be sent privately.  This is particularly important if you are running a business where you need to ask your customer’s for their credit card number.  If you don’t have an SSL certificate, you can bet your customer will go elsewhere.
